3. The Passenger Pigeon
The passenger pigeon, once abundant in North America, is now extinct due to a combination of habitat destruction, overhunting, and, to some extent, climate change. Passenger pigeons were highly social birds that relied on large flocks for breeding and protection. However, the widespread deforestation of their habitat, coupled with unregulated hunting for meat and sport, decimated their populations by the late 19th century.
Climate change likely exacerbated their decline by altering migration patterns and disrupting food sources. Despite efforts to conserve the species, the last known passenger pigeon, named Martha, died in captivity in 1914, marking the tragic end of a once-thriving species.
