3. Baby Corncrake

Corncrake chicks are fluffy, black, and barely bigger than a golf ball. These elusive birds are rarely seen, even as adults, so spotting their babies is almost unheard of. They mature quickly and are independent within weeks, disappearing into tall grasses. Their soft peeping is one of the few ways to know they’re around before they vanish into the wild.
