10. California – Mountain Lion

California’s deadliest animal is the mountain lion, also known as the cougar or puma. These stealthy, powerful predators inhabit forests, canyons, and mountainous terrain. While attacks on humans are rare, they do occur, particularly when the animal is cornered, surprised, or defending cubs. Adult mountain lions can weigh over 150 pounds and are capable of silently stalking prey over great distances. California’s expanding suburbs and recreational hiking areas increase the potential for human encounters. To stay safe, experts recommend hiking in groups, keeping children close, avoiding running, and making oneself appear large if a mountain lion is sighted.
