17. Georgia – Eastern Lubber Grasshopper

The Eastern lubber grasshopper is not deadly through direct attack, but its bright coloration and toxic secretions pose a threat to pets and small animals. Found throughout Georgia, this massive insect can grow over 3 inches long and emits a foul, foamy secretion when threatened. While it doesn’t bite or sting, ingestion of the toxins can lead to vomiting or paralysis in small animals. Its sheer abundance during the summer months also makes it a significant agricultural pest, devastating crops and ornamental plants. Gardeners and pet owners should be vigilant, especially if children or pets are curious about colorful bugs. Gloves and proper disposal are key to safely handling infestations.
