23. Kentucky – Copperhead

Kentucky’s most dangerous animal is the copperhead snake, a venomous pit viper found throughout the state. Copperheads are responsible for the majority of snakebites in the region. Their copper-colored, patterned skin allows them to blend into leaf litter and forest floors, making them easy to accidentally step on. While their venom is rarely fatal to healthy adults, it can cause extreme pain, swelling, and tissue damage. Children and the elderly are more at risk. Copperheads are not aggressive but will bite if threatened. Avoid walking barefoot in wooded or rocky areas, especially at night. If bitten, seek medical treatment immediately and remain as calm and still as possible.
