28. Minnesota – Timber Wolf

The timber wolf, or gray wolf, is Minnesota’s apex predator and a symbol of wilderness. While attacks on humans are extremely rare, they can be deadly under unusual circumstances—especially if the animal is rabid or desperate for food. More often, wolves pose a threat to livestock and pets in rural areas. Timber wolves are powerful hunters with strong jaws and incredible stamina, able to chase prey for miles. Their presence can alter local ecosystems by controlling deer populations, but increased interaction with humans raises concern. To stay safe, do not feed wolves or leave pet food outdoors. If encountered, make yourself appear large and slowly back away without turning.
