36. New Mexico – Kissing Bug

Kissing bugs, found throughout New Mexico, may appear harmless but can transmit Chagas disease—a potentially life-threatening illness. These nocturnal insects bite humans around the mouth and eyes while they sleep, depositing parasites in their feces. If the parasites enter the body through the bite wound or mucous membranes, infection can occur. Chagas disease can lead to heart complications and digestive issues years after initial infection. Kissing bugs are often found in cracks of walls, under mattresses, or near pets’ bedding. Prevent infestations by sealing entry points, using screens, and maintaining clean sleeping areas. If bitten or you find one indoors, contact public health officials for identification and guidance.
