42. Rhode Island – Portuguese Man o’ War

Though often mistaken for a jellyfish, the Portuguese man o’ war is a venomous marine creature found off Rhode Island’s coast during warmer months. It delivers a painful, whip-like sting through long, trailing tentacles that can extend up to 30 feet. Contact can cause intense pain, welts, fever, difficulty breathing, and in rare cases, severe allergic reactions requiring emergency care. Even washed-up specimens can sting, making beachcombing hazardous after storms. Swimmers and surfers are most at risk during jellyfish blooms or warm currents. If stung, rinse with saltwater, avoid rubbing, and seek medical attention if symptoms escalate. Respecting ocean advisories and avoiding contact ensures safer enjoyment of Rhode Island’s shoreline.
