44. Tennessee – Blister Beetle

Tennessee’s blister beetles pose a hidden threat due to their chemical defense mechanism. When crushed or disturbed, these insects release a toxin called cantharidin that causes severe blistering on human skin. Accidental contact can occur while gardening, handling infested crops, or walking barefoot in grassy areas. Blister beetles can also be dangerous to livestock if ingested in contaminated feed, leading to fatal poisoning. They are most active during warm months and are often attracted to light. To avoid exposure, wear gloves when gardening and check for beetles in outdoor produce. If contact occurs, wash the area thoroughly and avoid scratching to prevent further irritation.
