17. Alaska: Chicken
Established as a gold mining community, this town required a permanent name when incorporating a post office in 1902. Early prospectors survived harsh winters by hunting a local grouse species called ptarmigan. Unable to agree on how to properly spell the bird’s name, they compromised and registered the town as Chicken.
