20. Michigan: Hell
Operating in Livingston County, this community officially formed in 1841. The most accepted origin involves early settler George Reeves, who paid local workers in homemade whiskey. When asked what he wanted to name the new municipality, Reeves reportedly told officials they could name it Hell for all he cared.
