17. Texas – Sunnyside (Houston)
Houston is too large and too uneven to treat as one crime story with an overall violent crime rate of 1,211 per 100k residents. Sunnyside represents a more accurate picture of where long-standing issues concentrate. This south Houston neighborhood has faced decades of economic pressure, higher violent crime than many surrounding districts, and slow recovery despite the city’s overall growth. Abandoned properties, inconsistent redevelopment, and limited opportunity in certain blocks have shaped its reputation. While other parts of Houston have become hubs for business and expansion, Sunnyside reflects a very different reality inside the same metro. Crime here is not just about incidents, but about long-term conditions that make stability harder to maintain compared to wealthier Houston areas.
