15. Minnesota – North Minneapolis
Minneapolis has been in the news lately for all the wrong reasons. North Minneapolis reflects a long-standing divide within one of the Midwest’s most developed states and contributing to it’s violent crime rate of 1,281 per 100k residents. While the broader Twin Cities area has experienced economic growth, this neighborhood has faced persistent challenges related to poverty, housing inequality, and higher violent crime rates compared to surrounding districts. Community programs and redevelopment efforts exist, but progress has been uneven across different blocks. The area’s reputation is shaped not just by incidents, but by long-term structural gaps. In Minnesota’s overall context, North Minneapolis remains one of the clearest examples of how urban inequality concentrates risk in specific neighborhoods.
