Jackson is Mississippi’s most dangerous city, with a violent crime rate of approximately 940 per 100k residents as of early 2026. While its overall violent ranking is not as high as you’d expect, it is the murder capital of the nation that’s why we had to rank it this high at about 73 homicides per 100k.
The city’s high crime stems from severe economic decline, infrastructure collapses (like the water crisis), and a high density of gang-related activity in Hinds County. However, 2025 saw a significant positive shift: homicides dropped to 63, the city’s lowest total since 2016, down from a peak of 133 just a few years prior.
