The white lemur phalanger, a small marsupial found in Australia’s rainforests, is highly vulnerable to climate change. These adorable creatures can’t tolerate temperatures above 30°C for extended periods and are at risk of heat-related mortality during heatwaves. In 2005, a severe heatwave nearly wiped out the entire population, leading scientists to declare the species extinct. However, small populations were spotted in 2014, offering hope for their survival.
Yet, as temperatures continue to rise, their habitats may become increasingly inhospitable, threatening their long-term survival. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect the remaining populations of this unique marsupial and prevent further decline.
