5. He May Not Have Written a Single One of His Songs

Despite recording over 600 songs throughout his career, Elvis Presley didn’t write any of them. While his voice and presence defined rock and roll, the lyrics and melodies came from others. He was known to receive writing credits on some tracks — mostly due to business deals — but he didn’t actively contribute to songwriting. His manager, Colonel Tom Parker, negotiated contracts that gave Elvis part of the publishing rights, even when he didn’t pen a single lyric. This practice was controversial and allowed Elvis to profit off the work of other songwriters, particularly Black artists. It’s a side of his stardom many fans overlook. The truth is, much of his success was built on the talent and creativity of others, not his pen.
