12. Hawaii – Box Jellyfish

Hawaii’s beautiful coastal waters hide a silent threat — the Box Jellyfish, considered the most lethal animal in the state. These jellyfish are nearly invisible in the water and possess long, stinging tentacles covered in venomous cells. Stings can result in severe pain, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and even death in extreme cases. Box jellyfish typically appear in near-shore waters about 8–10 days after a full moon, especially on Oahu’s south-facing beaches. Swimmers, surfers, and divers are urged to check local alerts before entering the water. Immediate rinsing with vinegar and prompt medical treatment are essential after a sting to reduce complications.
