14. Idaho – Grizzly Bear

Idaho’s remote wilderness areas are home to the grizzly bear — the state’s most dangerous animal. Grizzlies are immensely powerful, weighing up to 800 pounds and capable of running over 30 mph. Though typically reclusive, grizzlies may attack if surprised or defending cubs or food. Encounters are most likely in the Selkirk and Bitterroot Mountains. Attacks, while infrequent, can be fatal due to the bear’s sheer size and strength. Hikers in Idaho should always carry bear spray, make noise on trails to avoid startling wildlife, store food properly when camping, and be cautious in known grizzly country, particularly during early mornings and evenings.
