15. Colorado – Black Bear

While generally not aggressive, black bears in Colorado can be deadly when they feel threatened or cornered, especially if cubs are present. As human settlements continue to expand into bear territory, encounters have increased, often due to improperly stored food or garbage. Black bears are powerful, with strong jaws and sharp claws that can cause fatal injuries. They can also run at speeds of up to 30 mph. Most attacks occur when the bear is startled or protecting its young. To stay safe, avoid leaving food outdoors, secure trash, and carry bear spray when hiking. Make noise on trails to avoid surprising them. If you encounter a bear, never run—back away slowly and make yourself look larger.
