16. Delaware – Eastern Yellow Jacket

Although small, the Eastern yellowjacket is one of the most aggressive stinging insects in Delaware. They are particularly dangerous due to their tendency to sting multiple times and their hyper-defensive nature when their nests are disturbed. Yellow jackets are responsible for more stinging-related injuries than any other insect in the state. For allergic individuals, even a single sting can trigger life-threatening anaphylaxis. Nests are often built underground or in wall cavities, making them hard to detect. Avoid wearing strong scents or brightly colored clothing outdoors, and be cautious near food or sugary drinks. If a nest is spotted, call a professional for removal instead of attempting it yourself.
