19. Illinois – White-Tailed Deer

Although not predatory, white-tailed deer are responsible for numerous fatalities in Illinois each year, mostly due to vehicle collisions. These deer are abundant across the state and often cross highways and rural roads unexpectedly, particularly during the fall mating season. Collisions with deer can cause significant injuries and fatalities for both drivers and passengers. They can also damage vehicles extensively. The danger increases at dawn and dusk when deer are most active. To stay safe, reduce speed in deer zones, stay alert, and use high beams when possible. If a deer crosses, brake firmly—do not swerve, as this can lead to more severe accidents.
