2. South Carolina – Alligator Snapping Turtle
The alligator snapping turtle is one of the largest freshwater turtles native to South Carolina. Known for its powerful jaw, it can deliver a serious bite capable of causing severe injuries. These turtles are mostly docile but will defend themselves aggressively if threatened. They live in rivers, lakes, and swamps, and accidental encounters with swimmers or fishermen can lead to bites. Caution is advised near water bodies where these turtles reside. Their strong bite and sharp beak make them one of the most dangerous reptiles in the state, despite their slow movements.
