22. Kansas – Red Imported Fire Ant
Red imported fire ants in Kansas are aggressive and highly territorial. Their painful stings can cause allergic reactions, and in some cases, anaphylaxis. These ants build large, dome-shaped mounds in open, sunny areas like lawns, parks, and pastures. Disturbing a mound results in a swarm attack, with ants latching on and stinging repeatedly. Children and pets are especially vulnerable, often unknowingly stepping on nests. Fire ants are also destructive to crops and electrical equipment. To stay safe, avoid barefoot walking in grassy areas and educate children about ant mounds. If stung, clean the area and watch for signs of an allergic reaction. Severe infestations may require professional extermination.
