26. Maryland – Coyote

Coyotes have expanded their range into Maryland, adapting well to suburban and rural areas. Though typically shy, they can become aggressive when habituated to human food or when protecting pups. Attacks on humans are rare but not unheard of—especially on pets. They are opportunistic predators, feeding on small animals, garbage, and even unattended livestock. As their population grows, so do encounters. To reduce risks, avoid feeding wildlife, secure trash, and keep pets indoors at night. If approached by a coyote, make loud noises and try to scare it off without turning your back. Their cunning behavior and adaptability make them a quiet but persistent threat across the state.
