27. Massachusetts – Rat

In Massachusetts’ urban areas, rats pose serious health and safety risks. These rodents spread diseases like leptospirosis, hantavirus, and salmonella through droppings and urine. They are also capable of inflicting bites, particularly in unsanitary or densely populated areas. Rats chew through wires and structures, leading to electrical fires or property damage. Their presence is often linked to improperly disposed food waste or cluttered storage spaces. While rarely fatal, rat-borne illnesses can cause significant complications, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. To avoid infestations, seal food tightly, maintain cleanliness, and use secure trash bins. City efforts to control rat populations continue, but vigilance at the household level is equally essential.
