30. Missouri – Lone Star Tick

The Lone Star tick is Missouri’s most dangerous animal due to its potential to transmit illnesses like ehrlichiosis, tularemia, and the unusual Alpha-Gal Syndrome—which causes a red meat allergy. These ticks are aggressive biters and active in tall grass and wooded areas during warmer months. Small and hard to detect, they attach themselves to skin and feed for hours, spreading pathogens in the process. People often don’t realize they’ve been bitten until symptoms appear. To protect yourself, wear long clothing, use insect repellent, and conduct full-body checks after spending time outdoors. Removing ticks quickly and properly with tweezers helps reduce the risk of disease transmission.
