34. New Hampshire – Porcupine
Though not aggressive, porcupines in New Hampshire can cause significant harm, particularly to pets and curious hikers. When threatened, they raise their quills as a defense mechanism. These barbed quills detach easily and can embed deeply into skin, causing infection or injury if not promptly removed. Pets are frequent victims, often requiring veterinary treatment. Porcupines also damage wooden structures and vehicles by gnawing on salty surfaces. While they aren’t deadly to humans, complications from quill injuries can be severe. It’s important to maintain distance and avoid provoking them. If a pet is quilled, seek veterinary assistance to ensure all quills are properly removed and infection is prevented.
