35. New Jersey – Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets are New Jersey’s most dangerous insects due to their aggressive behavior and painful stings. These wasps can sting multiple times and often do so in swarms when their nests are disturbed. Their stings can cause severe allergic reactions, including anaphylactic shock, which can be fatal without prompt medical attention. Nests are often hidden underground, in bushes, or wall voids—posing risks to unsuspecting individuals. Yellowjackets are particularly active in late summer and early fall. Avoid sweet-smelling perfumes, bright clothing, and open containers of sugary drinks when outdoors. If you discover a nest, contact a professional exterminator rather than attempting removal yourself.
