41. Oregon – Cougar

Cougars, also known as mountain lions, roam the forests and mountainous terrain of Oregon. Though attacks on humans are extremely rare, they are capable predators, weighing up to 200 pounds and skilled at ambush hunting. Most human encounters occur during hiking or trail running in remote areas. A hungry, cornered, or habituated cougar may perceive humans—especially children or lone individuals—as prey. To avoid confrontation, hike in groups, make noise, and keep children close. If you encounter a cougar, do not run. Maintain eye contact, appear large, and back away slowly. If attacked, fight back aggressively to deter the animal.
