43. South Dakota – Mountain Goat
In South Dakota’s rugged terrain, mountain goats are admired for their climbing skills, but they can become aggressive if approached, particularly during rutting season. These animals are strong and territorial, with sharp horns that can inflict serious injuries. Incidents often involve hikers who get too close for photos or attempt to feed them. Mountain goats have been known to chase or charge humans who encroach on their space. Keeping a safe distance and using binoculars for observation is essential. Never feed wildlife, and avoid trails where goats are actively grazing or resting. Respecting their space is key to a safe wilderness experience.
