48. West Virginia – Elk
Elk were reintroduced to West Virginia in recent years and are thriving—but they come with risks. These massive animals can weigh over 700 pounds and become aggressive during mating season or when startled. Vehicle collisions involving elk are increasingly common and often deadly due to the animal’s size. They also pose threats to crops and property. Always keep a safe distance if you spot one in the wild, and never attempt to feed or approach them. If driving in elk territory, especially at dawn or dusk, stay alert and reduce speed. Proper signage and public education are key to minimizing accidents.
