5. Pennsylvania – Eastern Gray Squirrel
Though they may appear cute and harmless, eastern gray squirrels in Pennsylvania can be surprisingly dangerous. Their biggest threat lies in their tendency to invade homes and chew through electrical wiring, which has been linked to numerous house fires. Additionally, these squirrels can carry parasites and diseases like leptospirosis and tularemia, posing health risks to humans and pets. When cornered, they may bite or scratch in self-defense. Encounters often occur when people attempt to feed or handle them. It’s best to admire squirrels from a distance and take steps to squirrel-proof attics and roofs. Never attempt to trap or remove them without professional help.
