28. Utah – South Salt Lake
South Salt Lake has long been one of Utah’s most urbanized and diverse areas, but also one of the most frequently cited in crime discussions. The city has experienced higher rates of property crime, theft, and social instability compared to surrounding suburban communities. Dense housing, transit corridors, and older commercial areas contribute to these patterns. While Utah is widely known for its low crime rates overall Salt Lake cities surprises everyone with a violent crime rate of 969 per 100k residents. South Salt Lake represents a more complex urban environment within the state. Its challenges are closely tied to density and socioeconomic variation rather than a single defining issue.
