Unlike alligators, which are primarily freshwater dwellers, crocodiles have special adaptations that allow them to tolerate saltwater. This ability enables some crocodile species, like the saltwater crocodile, to inhabit coastal areas and even venture out to sea, making them the only reptile truly at home in both saltwater and freshwater environments.
